The Freesound Project - Noise under Creative Commons

Wanting to add some royalty free sounds to your blog? The Freesound Project is for you!

The Freesound Project aims to create a huge collaborative database of audio snippets, samples, recordings, bleeps, ... released under the Creative Commons Sampling Plus License. The Freesound Project provides new and interesting ways of accessing these samples, allowing users to
  • browse the sounds in new ways using keywords, a "sounds-like" type of browsing and more
  • up and download sounds to and from the database, under the same creative commons license
  • interact with fellow sound-artists!
We also aim to create an open database of sounds that can also be used for scientific research.
A word of caution: Not all environments lend to themselves well to noisy websites. Libraries, classrooms and places of employment tend to frown on sudden, harsh outbursts. Be considerate in your design and give the user the option to easily stop the noise, use sound sparingly and/or briefly, or don't start the sound until the user says to begin playing.

Moving house - no posts for a week

We are moving house and offices and there probably won't be any tips for about a week.
I may surprise myself and do one anyway but don't hold your breath.
Have a great week!

Using Picasa to create a photo collage

Doug has written a number of articles in this blog about using Picasa as a photo tool for your blog - and more.
Picasa is not Hello
Snap a Picture
Google releases Picasa 2.0

Today I received a newsletter from Picasa that contained the following helpful instructions for creating a photo collage.

Ordering Prints: Give mom one gift from all the kids.
Use Picasa's "Collage" button to create a one-of-a kind Mother's Day gift featuring a fun photo collage. You can put your collage on a mug, apron, greeting card, even a mouse pad.

Get started:

1. Select the pictures in Picasa that you want to appear in the collage. (Hold the Ctrl key down to select multiple pictures from different folders.) All of the selected pictures will appear in the "Picture Tray" at the bottom of the screen.

2. Click the "Collage" button at the bottom of the screen.

3. Select the type of collage and background image. For location, select "Current Folder" (by default, Picasa will save your new image to the currently highlighted folder). Click the "Create" button to finish your collage.

4. Select your new collage so it appears in the "Picture Tray." Click the "Order" button at the bottom of the screen. This launches the screen to order prints and products. (You must be online.) Click "Choose" to select a print processor from the list. Follow the instructions on the "Order Prints" box to sign in.

5. Picasa will upload your collage to the website you selected. Shop and place your order on the website, following their usual checkout process.

Pamela Anderson has a blog

Yup! The star of Baywatch, VIP, and Stacked has a blog. Pamela Anderson writes well and informatively, and includes candid photos of herself on set. (Or maybe her staff do it for her.)
Either way it shows that blogging is considered an important marketing medium for business people and stars in showbiz are no different.
Obviously there are links to her marketing websites for apparel, calendars and pin up posters etc.

Blogger Performance Issues

Blogger is a free weblog service provided by Google. Of recent times there has been numerous issues with slowness and poor performance of the servers.
Blogger has its own blog, Blogger Buzz, where Biz Stone writes about this issue:

Performance is a huge priority for us and we're adding a bunch of new machines right now to speed things up. New machines are not an issue because here at Google we can add them quite smoothly as needed. The real issue is power—actual electricity, if you can believe it. So now we're adding more power in addition to more machines.

We use Blogger for this blog and many of the people on our team use Blogger for their own, personal blogs. We don't have a super-special employee server that gives us preference over anyone else so we are just as frustrated with slowness and performance problems. That being said, we are just as eager as you to make this fix so things will be fast again. For more specifics, again, please check out the status blog.
