Free Microsoft Web Design & Developer Event

Free Microsoft Web Design and Web Developer event in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney
'Mix On Campus' is a free Microsoft web design, multimedia and web developer event. Whether you're a technology student, you know a technology student (please invite them), or are just interested in the speaker sessions, feel free to register so you can come along and hear about the latest in web design, web dev and multimedia news.
DATES
Brisbane: 20 November, 10am to 4pm, QUT City Campus, Room 117, B Block, 2 George St, Brisbane

Whats up with Microsoft staff blogs?

Whats up over at Microsoft?

I just cleaned out my RSS feed reader for all the inactive feeds that were not being updated. Fortunately Google Reader is good at giving me that info.

But over half of the inactive feeds were from Microsoft staff blogs, mostly about Office products, Sharepoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Word etc. In most cases the sites had never been updated to say that the person was no longer working on that team or had stopped blogging about the product. In a couple of instances there wsa an explanation and a redirect to a team blog that was being updated.

Microsoft Sharepoint Deep Dive Training

I really want to go to this training session - a MOSS Deep Dive for 4 days, but.... and its a big but! Its $2860.
Still I can dream I get a contract between now and the beginning of November with a client working on Sharepoint that will pay me to go...

Heres what I would learn.
At course completion students will be able to:

  • Upgrade their Sharepoint v2 sites/portals to Sharepoint V3.
  • Implement and extend Microsoft Office client side solutions.
  • Implement custom workflows developed in Visual Studio .Net 2005
  • Setup and configure Sharepoint 2007 Infrastructure.
  • Architect the ‘Portal’ and sub-sites layouts and best strategies.
  • Know what the best practices are within the Sharepoint Space.
  • Create custom WebParts and Sharepoint customizations with ease.
  • Create Site wide features and event handlers.

Don't Think, Just Right-Click

Interesting article from the Microsoft Office Word Team's Blog
Recently while I was tutoring my Mom and Dad on Word 2007 I blurted out: "Just right-click." The remainder of this post is part explanation, part apology, and part justification.
Jonathan from the word team explains the right click philosphy
If you are like my Mom and Dad and do not design software for a living, chances are you never ask yourself questions like: "In what context is feature X most useful?" But, you most certainly have thoughts like "I need to do X to Y." when using software. My suggestion to my parents is my suggestion to you: right-click on Y and look for something like X. The intent here is not to be terse. It is to provide simple and helpful advice.
