Early game of football today

I had to get up at 6:35 this morning. Was on the road by 6:45 and at the ground by 7:15. We stood around talking for a few minutes then headed into the change rooms to get rubbed, strapped and dressed. Coming  out on to the ground we discovered it was still quite wet with dew, and very small for an AFL ground. I think it AFL2 was probably 30-40 metres short and probably 20 metres less wide. This made for an interesting game as 36 blokes got very close together – not a lot of room for kicking.

I was put at fullback for the entire game. The first bloke I had to mark up on playing full forward was way too fast for me. He got in front of me and took an easy mark. So I played a little in front of him for a it and spoiled the next couple of marks he ran for, and then a ball cam spiraling down toward us – I held him off and the ball sailed over my head and he grabbed it. Very annoying. Two goals scored on me. The next ball that came our way was way out on the sideline and was being tussled over by the forward pocket and half forward for their team and our back pocket and half back flank. My man went running there looking for the ball and as he got there I hit him hard. He didn’t come back for the rest of the game and I had a succession of other players rotate through full forward. One was a good 8 inches taller than me, but he was the easiest to mark. All though he ran hard he wasn’t too fast and i was able to keep body contact on him long enough to spoil his runs. I was also able to hold him away from the ball and stopped him getting involved in numerous passages of play. I did have one other chap that subbed for him who kicked two easy goals on me which was also annoying, but the rest of the guys who came in I either blocked them from marking or punched the ball away.

I had never played in the back line before the last game, and now I have had 2 games at full back, got coaches award for one and was mentioned second today. I didn’t think I had that good a game, but the other blokes all reckoned I did. Maybe I am just too hard on myself.

Microsoft Office 2007 Powerpoint Producer - Beta

Nick MacKechnie today announced on his website the release of PowerPoint Producer 2007 beta.

You will need to go to http://www.connect.microsoft.com to get it. Full instructions on Nick’s post.clip_image001

I downloaded and installed it easily, although it had several UAC prompts during the install.

I ran the wizard and added photos quickly from a folder (from Judes Birthday) and then added a song (Michael Frank’s “Eggplant” from The Art of Tea).

I was able to synchronise the pictures and song and then publish as a presentation really easily. Awesome tool.

If you use PowerPoint for timed presentations or speaking engagements, then you should definitely download and trial this tool.

Vintage Aviator developed in Drupal

The Vintage Aviator - Front page, on release, May 2008Wow – what an amazing website. Not only is the content fascinating – well to me anyway – I love old world war 1 and 2 vintage airplanes – and these machines a beauties – but the website is also a work of art. (and they are Kiwis!)

The Vintage Aviator is an amazing website. The developers have spent countless hours putting this together. There is a full description of what they did to make this work on the Drupal website.

They list all the modules they use as well as the custom modules developed and other tweaks they had to do. The developer, dman also explains how they solved the CSS issues (including ignoring some of the IE6 issues).

This is a great site – congrats to all involved.

What is your motivation for blogging?

First and foremost I blog to communicate ideas.  My first audience was myself when I started at Livejournal years and years ago, and my scope has grown larger and larger based on what projects I'm involved with.  I've tried blogging for money before (paid position, not like Pay Per Post), and as passionate as I was about the topic, I never felt very comfortable (I don't blog well under a deadline).  But my biggest motivation is that I have a bad memory...I'll forget my thought processes and troubles and successes all too easily, so blogging is a way for me to document what's in my head so I can have an opportunity to go back and reflect on those experiences.

Back To Basics: Windows Live Writer

This post proudly produced in Windows Live Writer.

This is not advertising – at least I am not getting paid to say this. However I do know one of the guys in the Microsoft Live Team, Angus Logan. These guys are knocking themselves out to get to market internet based services that extend and improve our productivity when working wired or wireless.

And I have to say that Windows Live Writer is an awesome tool! Anybody who blogs should be using it. Any body who has a website that they regularly update should be using it.

The latest version (available now in technical preview) adds some great picture handling features that mirror some the the effects from Word 2007. Drop shadows, reflections, and more – done with simple mouse clicks. Posted straight to your blog. did I say how easy it was?

Euro 2008 second half Russia v Spain

The Russians must have had a spray from the coach at half time because they came out a different looking side. They took the attack to Spain right from the kick off. This opened the play up somewhat and both sides

euro2008_logo

had opportunities but with no result in the first 15 minutes. The Spanish forwards are carving up the Russian backline. As a result every time Russia get control now they slow the game down. Spain keep sending through balls in. The last one I just saw cam flying down the field and the keeper actually cam outside the box sliding in to clear it away from under the attackers feet.

Another goal for Spain and a hat trick now for David Villa on his debut for Spain. The through ball was an incisive pass across the lagging defence to Villa who jinked around his man and then dodged the rushing in other backs and put it over the keeper in the 75th minute.

Euro 2008 first half Russia v Spain

The boys & I have been making a night of it.After I got home from football training, Judith, Jamie, Michael & I played a game of Munchkins. Following that it was onto the Playstation for FIFA 2007.After helping AC Milan beat Inter & then lose to Chelsea we got ready to watch a game of Euro 2008.

euro2008_logo This game is being played in Innsbruck in Austria & is between Russia & Spain.

Spain kicked off and got off to a slow start but after applying pressure for  15 minutes or so scored about 20 minutes in. Russia came straight back & only the post saved Spain. The next 5 minutes Spain just knocked it around the each other while Russia kept a tight defence. The next 20 minutes were more the same. Very unexciting football, though Russia had a chance at 38 minutes but was narrowly offside.

with 1 minute to go Spain scored again will an awesome through ball and go to the halftime break with good lead.

Finished Site Upgrade

Its done!

This site has been upgraded to version 6.2 of Drupal, and the theme has been changed. Nearly the same as before – just a little less cluttered and cleaner looking I hope.Feedback is always good!

drupal-logo1 I am really enjoying using Drupal 6.2. There are a lot of productivity gains for administrators now we are starting to get the hang of it. We have done 5 sites now.

Some of the cool features I have plugged into this site include the Views module, giving you the nice lists of data – like the Excel Posts, GeekGirl articles and Back To Basics Articles. By the way stay tuned for some more of these coming soon. There is also a translation feature provided by the Microsoft Live Team. Simply select your language from the drop down list and click the arrow to go and the site will split into two with English on the left and the other language on the right. I would really love some feedback from our foreign readers on this one.

Thanks for reading.

All My Books software for Free

Just catching up on my reading and linking of good stuff.

If you get into this one immediately you can score some free software. Giveaway of the day is giving away a free copy of All My Books, an electronic library organisation application from Bolide Software. Here's the blurb:

amb_logo Organize your collection of paper books into an electronic library. Track loaners and locate every book in just seconds.
Add books easily without typing full details: All My Books gets information about the book from the Internet automatically.

Group and browse your collection of books by title, author or publisher, or run a quick search by any field. You can even define your own fields to label the books, such as comments or memos, and search them later.

What use would be an electronic book organizer if you had to spend hours to catalogue your entire collection?
