Vista Explorer Tips

Mike at www.watchingthenet.com has a dozen Windows Vista tips

When Microsoft re-designed Vista's Windows Explorer interface, greater functionality was included compared to previous versions of Windows. While some of the functionality is easily noticed, a lot of built-in hidden features are not easily found or realized.

Guy from www.computerperformance.co.uk also has a page of advice and links to unlocking the power of vista for you.

Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 - problems with Excel Macros

Microsoft released Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) recently. According to their blurb
Microsoft® Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) represents a major evolution in security for Office 2003. It further hardens the Office suite against potential attacks and other security threats. This service pack also includes fixes that have been previously released as separate updates for Office 2003.
You can get specific information about this update in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article (923618): Description of Office 2003 Service Pack 3

Why Use Acrobat PDF Writer Instead of Non-Adobe Converters

Amit from Labnol discusses some of the reasons why 3rd Party PDF writer applications may not be as good as the full Adobe Acrobat offering.

The marketplace is flooded with non-Adobe PDF writers that promise to convert practically every file format into PDF.

Like Acrobat, you can install these third-party PDF generators [1, 2, 3] as virtual printers and create PDF files from any application that has the Print button. Some services go a step further - you send them a file as an email attachment and they'll mail it back to you as a PDF.

That's not all. WordPerfect and OpenOffice have in-built PDF printers. Microsoft released a free PDF add-in for all popular Office 2007 programs except Outlook. Then there are online suites like Google Docs and Zoho Office that allow you to save documents as PDF inside the browser without requiring any add-in.

Microsoft Training in Visual Studio ASP.NET 2.0

Thanks to Christian Longstaff, I have signed up for (and already completed the first of) a series of free training events that will get me 2 things - first of all more understanding of how to construct ASP.NET 2.0 web pages and forms, and second a chance to get some pretty cool gear from Microsoft.

Note this is only valid for Registered Partners in the Microsoft Partner Program. Any developer who doesn't have a tech net subscription should think seriously about becoming a partner, if not only for the Action Pack. We use tens of thousands of dollars of Microsoft software for the princely sum of AUD$700 a year.

For example we run a SBS premium server including Sharepoint and Exchange, with 10 CALs around $3000, 7 pcs running Vista and Office 2007, 3 PCs running XP Pro and Office 2003, Applications like Visual Web Studio, SQL Server and Expression Web.

Thieves

Wow - my adrenalin is pumping now.
Someone just tried to break in. I was working in my office right beside the front door, and the door was open, though the screen door was locked. Someone tried the handle a couple of times and I bolted around and grabbed my big piece of malacca cane that is by the front door. By the time I had the outside light on and the door open whoever it was had bolted.
If they come back I'm ready!

Exhausted and testy

I think my medication isn't working right. I have graves disease and am on medication to control the thyroxin levels in my body. I have a feeling that it is not working right, and my wife tells me I am testy lately - one of the symptoms. I have noticed the heat a lot more lately, and am feeling under pressure wioth some deadlines that are causing me to be a little more short tempered than I should be.

Or maybe the fact that I turn 40 next week is the reason - I am just a grumpy old man!
