What did I do today?

I did a large number of things today and ticked off all these things from my to do list:

  • Finished GST returns for 3 companies and paid GST
  • Billed a client for annual email services
  • Followed up on a job that is being worked on by Bob
  • Sent an email to contracting agencies looking for some contracting work
  • Successfully downloaded and installed tinymce for this drupal 5.x website in preparation for needing it for a new client - downloaded for research some video content modules for same potential client
  • Researched and installed Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 side by side with my 2.0 installation on our SBS2003 server for our intranet. Troubleshot problems and resolved. Blogged the process. Next task here is to slowly migrate what we are doing on the 2.0 intranet to the 3.0 version.

Sharepoint 3.0

I had a few dramas installing the side by side WSS3.0 installation on my SBS2003 server. I had a error when running the Sharepoint Products and Technologies Configuraation wizard.

The error was:

Failed to create the configuration database
An exception of type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException was thrown.
Additional exception information: Could not find the stored procedure
'dbo.proc_getObjectsByClass'.

I posted the problem in the Microsoft partners community newsgroup and got a prompt reply from Robert Li at Microsoft. I needed a hotfix for KB934790. After installing this I was able to complete the rest of the instructions in the installation guide.

Thanks to Susan and Robert for the help!

SBS2003 Best Practices Analyser

I installed the SBS2003 Best Practices Analyser the other day.
I didn't have many things that needed fixing and most of them were pretty simple to resolve after I read Susan the SBS Diva's blog and got pointed to a list of SBS BPA Known Issues/Common Questions

I was able to fix the TCP chimney issue, upgraded Exchange server to Service Pack 2, changed the default .NET version for my SharePoint sites, turned of EDNS, and a few other minor issues.

HTC Touch Dual

There is a new exciting HTC Touch Dual phone just out. It combines an intuitive touch screen and keypad within a cool design. With the flick of your thumb, the touch screen slides to reveal a handy smart-sized keyboard. If you prefer to touch, the interface allows you to quickly go through your emails, messages, music and images. When you touch the screen you activate the home page to give you an instant view of your email, calendar, messages, missed calls and dynamic weather updates. Get onto HTC's website for more specs.

Installing Sharepoint WSS3 on SBS2K3

Today I decided to install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on my SBS2003 server. Actually I didn't just decide, I have been planning and thinking about this for sometime.
With some help from Susan the SBS diva I found the following pages and steps to do this.

  1. First of all BACKUP my existing SharePoint site. I followed the instructions to backup companyweb data
  2. Second read the Installing WSS3 on SBS2003 Server Whitepaper
  3. Download SharePoint WSS3
  4. Follow all the steps in the whitepaper to install WSS3 on the server
  5. Have stir fried kangaroo and mushrooms with scrambled eggs on toast with cheese for lunch

Some other pages I looked at and reviewed were:
The Company Web in SBS 2003
Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Document: Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Quick Reference Guide
