What is your motivation for blogging?

I have been inventing and developing new digital audio/video software and technology for more than 15 years, first at the University of Mannheim, Germany, later at the CSIRO, Australia, and now in my start-up Vquence. I got involved with open source software and open standards in 2000 and have since been contributing to MPEG, IETF, Xiph.Org, and more recently the W3C. I'm also active in the local open source community. I believe I have some interesting things to share and I hope there are people interested in reading about these things.

What is it that you find yourself blogging about, mostly the same stuff or does it vary?

I blog about a lot of different things but try to avoid personal posts. Most of my posts somehow relate to digital media, since that is my area of expertise, where I spend my private time on open source projects, and my business. A lot are about my company and video analytics. Many are on open source and the community, such as the LCA and FOMS conferences. Some have code in it. I only have one post on women in IT, because I'd rather practice than talk about it.

What style of blogging do you do, short and regular, or not so regular but long, other? And is your blogging just text or do you also use audio or video?

I do whatever is suitable: mostly text posts, but some contain video, attachments, or code. I try to make them short at less than 3 paragraphs, but have recently started writing longer posts. I don't want to bore the audience, but OTOH if there is something to explain and it needs space, then it has to take it.

42-15530438 How Silvia became a Geek Girl Blogger:

Friends have been asking me to share my news via a blog for a long time. 2 years ago I finally started one - roughly at the same time as we founded the start-up and I set up my first private servers. My earlier blogs were short and infrequent, but I have become more sophisticated in recent times and try to share news immediately as I get them.
